JCSC Update 5/30
Good afternoon, Barracudas!
Week 3 of the summer season is approaching, and I don't know about y'all, but I'm dying for us to actually do this sport in the sunshine!!! Hopefully it'll be here soon! I've got a handful of things to cover in this email, so I apologize in advance for its length.
Time Trials: First of all, a huge thank you goes out to all the board members, parents, volunteers, and assistant coaches who made last night a success despite the weather. Results have been transferred into SwimTopia, so everyone should be able to view their times in their actual profiles now. We had a hefty amount of best times, even from kids who've been out of the water for months, which is certainly exciting! Along with us coaches now being aware of what things need to be worked on, we hope that swimmers can set some goals for the season. Whether it be swimming events legally, dropping time, or winning heats, it'll just be a few days before that next opportunity!
Meet Tuesday at Gulfwood: This coming Tuesday, June 3rd, we have our first dual meet against the Gulfwood Gators located in the Cedar Bluff area of West Knoxville. Please refer to Barbara Nichols' email earlier today concerning volunteer jobs. I'm reattaching Gulfwood's letter to us for convenience. We are in the water for warm-ups at 5:25 PM, so please be at the pool no later than 5:10 PM! Us coaches will be there before 5, and I'll send a Remind message with where we're posted up. With it being a dual meet, we need to get everyone completely checked in before warm-ups (send your kid to find me). With that being said, if your swimmer becomes ill or injured the morning of a meet, that's information I need to know ASAP! My phone number is (512) 709-7297. The meet will start at 6 like normal.
There are many families that have not yet RSVP'd for this meet. I need you to go to SwimTopia and mark "Attending" or "Not Attending" by Sunday at midnight. This will allow us to get entries done throughout Monday so that we're ready to go on Tuesday.
JCOP Pavilion & Parking: Earlier this week, somebody from the City called and asked if we'd be willing to move our afternoon practices from 5-7 to 4-6. I basically said "no," since we're 2 weeks into the season and 5-7 has been our PM practice slot for years. The concern was over conflicting space for groups who reserve the pavilion and L-shaped pool for parties starting at 6. I told them, as a compromise, I would ask our families who come to the 5 or 6 PM practices to avoid sitting under the pavilion where the public enters the pool area, as well as to avoid parking in the spots right in front of that entrance so the groups who have reserved it for parties can bring in their stuff. The Jefferson City Outdoor Pool doesn't belong to the swim team, it belongs to the City, and we're grateful to be able to use it as much as we do. I think this is a very reasonable request that we can honor.
Navy SEAL Water Training: Misit Gray who coaches the Newport and Cocke County swim teams called me this morning inviting JCSC to a neat event next week. This coming Wednesday, June 4th, some Navy SEALs will be at the Newport Community Center from 4 to 5 PM speaking and doing some "water training" with older swimmers. Any of our high schoolers are welcome to attend! Misti said to just tell the front desk you're there for swim practice and head to the pool. Us coaches will not be there because we'll be getting ready for practice. If you attend this event, we'd like for you to still come to practice at 8:30 AM or 6 PM that day.
THANKS FOR READING MY NOVEL!
GO CUDAS!!!
Coach Josh
